Teacher Week: Who

I have a hot 40 minutes until I need to go to bed... So, while the hubby watches football, I decided I had a tiny bit of time to link up with Blog Hoppin' tonight for Teacher Week!

Let's begin with the most obvious. Hello, my name is Jessica Hursh! ;) Perfecto!!

FAMILY

If you follow me on instagram, then you are well aware (maybe way too aware) that I just got married!
My husbands name is Andrew! He works in sales and is a very smooth talker! ;)

This is my dad and I walking down the isle! :)

Here we have my beautiful mother, me, Andrew and his mother Larissa.

I also have a little (big) brother named Hunter. He is the sweetest guy in the world! He just left for college this past weekend...tear!
Don't mind my super tan here... This was at the Miss Ohio Pageant 3 year ago...Yes, I did that... one time and one time only!! You've got to try everything once right?

Here is a picture of me in Miss Ohio! Ohhh boy.... ha ha!

FRIENDS

This is Mindy... sister from another mister... FOR REALZZZZ!! ha ha! This is one girl that I can rely on for anything I would ever need. She knows how to just brighten my day... even living in Kentucky! I just love her. We met my sophomore year of college, sat in class next to each other and that was that! She and I instantly bonded and formed a forever friendship!

This adorable lady right here was my Matron of Honor in my wedding. This girl is also like a sister. She lives in Colorado with her hubby now! This girl thinks like me, has duh and wHat? moments like me, loves make-up, fashion and just being silly! She is an AWESOME person!

This gorgeous lady has been my friend since, well, birth!! We were literally born in the same room (3 days apart)... My little toosh was leaving as hers was arriving into this world! She and I are those ladies that are just plain goofy together and will be friends until we are old gray and cranky!

These are close friends Andrew and I made! These people are so sweet and definitely friends we'd love to keep forever!

THINGS I LOVE
So, here are a few things I LOVE! I'm sure you can guess my first one...
YES...OMG... I LOVE TEACHING!

Next, I adore my two fur babies!!

I also guess... I am obsessed with the Bengals... just because the hubby forced me into it! ha ha

I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about me!! Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow! We start school tomorrow! Wish me luck!!

Here We Go...Peek At My Week!

Well, summer is officially over... I am not sad about it either... I'm one of those crazy people that LOVES going back to school! I think I'll especially love it this year because I'm teaching third grade!! I can't wait for all the fun I get to have with my thirdies!! They're all so adorable and super 'spunky' so far.. (Meet the Teacher night tells a lot)!! ;)

Before we begin; a pep talk... from kid president!...This is inspiring!

Also, another inspiring video before you begin your year... this one is great, especially if you have students that need extra support.

Here are my plans for the first week of school. You can see here that I am an over-planner... I'll probably copy other stuff too from my Back to School packet for Third Grade just in case we need something else to do.

Remember, we are not yet on a schedule so those times you see at the top mean nothing this week. You'll see as the week goes on though, that I'm trying to create the routine. Baby steps! :)

In my plans you might notice something called, "Teach Me Math." This is unit 1 of my math curriculum for my thirdies this year. It works well with the Math Workshop model. It has whole group lessons, whole group activities, partner/independent work and homework!
We don't have a math curriculum to follow, so, I get to be creative! The first one is all about number sense for the third graders; it can also work for second graders too (mid-year)!

Head over to follow my TPT store if you want to check it out when it's posted.

If you are interested in Teach Me Math you can grab it here!

If you plan to do math workshop in your third grade classroom this year, then I HIGHLY recommend these math stations! They provide great spiral review and they keep the kids engaged all year long!

Here are the freebies shown in the visual plans above.

I hope you enjoy these freebies!

Have a great start to your school year!!

A Class Blog!

Do you send home weekly newsletters each Monday or Friday? Always, always scrambling to make it to the copy machine because...oops, I forgot to make copies of the newsletter! That was always the last thing on my mind and the thing that stressed me out to no end each week! So, solution... a class blog!

This blog is in no way a replacement to this golden gal' right here. It'll double as my weekly newsletter AND a blog for my students to post on! Yes, you heard me correctly... my students will be posting on this blog!!!

I hope parents will LOVE this because they'll get a front seat view into their child's classroom!
So, how will students do posts on my blog you ask?
Well, first and foremost... it won't start right away... we have lots of other things that are WAY more important than learning how to do a blog post.

When we get to that point though, I will teach students HOW to do it and then I will teach them WHAT to post about.

The possibilities are endless! Students can reflect on learning, review a book, discuss and author, create a how to writing and MUCH more!!

I'm thinking about also doing 'in class' linky parties (which means down the road each student may have their own blog-private of course) and we will have days where students can link up and do a blog post on their own personal blog.

My purpose for this you ask? I want them to become AMAZING writers! I'm not going to make this a requirement but rather a choice during writers workshop and my writers center. Students will still go through the writing process; brainstorming to publishing before finalizing their blog post! Ugh... I'm just excited!

That's about all I have right now... but, I just wanted to share this with you in case you would like to do something similar in your classroom this year!

Meet The Teacher Packet!

**If you are interested in my Meet the Teacher Editable Packet then click the image below***
**The link below no longer works. The packet has since been updated**

I have more tips for you today!! This post focuses on meet the teacher night! For some, this can be a bit nerve racking... especially if you're a new teacher! I know my belly still gets butterflies when I meet new parents and students. So, here are all sorts of tips and forms for you!

Be sure to make your classroom stands out from the hallway. It makes it easier for parents to notice your room and for people in the building to direct them to your room.

For example, parents asked where my room was last year and the office said, "The classroom with the balloons at the end of the hallway."

It makes it 'cute' and welcoming for families too.

I also like to make the classroom have a bit of excitement as well! This is what my students desks looked like last year at meet the teacher night!

I provided students with a folder (well, the office did) with important paper work. I created my own informational packet which is what you see on top of the folder with the adorable graphics! I blew up balloons, wrote student names on them and taped them to the table so they didn't fly around. In the green bag there are candies and goodies I got from the party store.

Their tables were neat and clean, but still fun!

Now, I bet your wondering... what is in that packet?!!!!
You're going to get your own editable copy today with the one I completed last year as a reference! SCORE FOR YOU!!

There are cover pages other than 3rd grade. They go from K-4.
In my packet I included a blurb, my contact info, a letter to the student to tell a bit about me, a questionnaire for students to fill out about their child, class list for classroom birthdays and parties and the way I grade in the classroom.

I also included a lot of odds and ends things that parents need to know. I included information about the classroom rules, specials and what kids need to have ready each day, my behavior plan, lunch money policies, homework, volunteers, classroom parties, morning policy, spelling tests and the daily folders.

Then, I had the forms you see below set out on a table for students to fill out WHILE at my meet the teacher night!

These papers are below the math bulletin board that you see. I had pens set out so parents didn't need to scramble for one.

Are you ready to get your packet going?!!
Download the file and set up your own adorable packet!
