Peeking into the this week!

Ready to peek into this week!!

I hope so! I've got all kinds of goodies for you embedded in my lesson plans this week!
My students do not have a good understanding of characters in a story so that is all this week is going to be about! I wanted to have a little 'farm' theme this week so I chose the book, "Cindy Moo" by: Lori Mortensen

I am also using bits and pieces of Deanna Jump's Farm unit and some of Fabulous in First Grade's freebies from her farm week!

Here are my plans for this week!

Remember--all kinds of freebie links for my Cindy Moo unit inside along with some other goodies! Make sure to download it as a pdf so you can click on the links!

You will notice that some of what I had on my lesson plans last week are repeated this week. That's because we got canceled and delayed last week! (great week) ;)

I have also... finally.... finished my write the room activity set! I have been making the activities as I go and I finally had some time yesterday to sit and finish the whole thing.

Basically there are 21 activities in here so there are a ton of options that you can pick & choose from!

Thanks to Dee Dee for this weekly linky so we can all share our visual plans!!
<3 it!!

CLick to check out other great bloggers and their plans!!!

Have a great week!!

Peek At My Week!

What a week it was! I feel 10 steps behind and I am just now catching up right before I hit the hay!!

Here are my visual plans for this week! As, almost always...there are freebies inside! :)

By downloading my lesson plans you will have the link to a great freebie from me as well as great ones from a few others!!

Just click on any of the pictures of my lesson plans and it'll take you to google docs where you can download my plans as a pdf to click on the links.

The freebie that is included in my lesson plans called, "Spin, Flip and Write" is a word work activity that will be out in my desert bins from now on. Basically, all I did was print off short u words. Put them facing backwards under numbers 1-3. Students spin the spinner and flip 1 card around under the number they spun. Then, they read and write the word. Super easy to maintain and great practice!! I can't wait to introduce it to my kids!

Here is a Johnny Appleseed one! We are doing a quick craft on Thursday for his birthday and attaching this to it!

Link up with Dee Dee to share your plans!

I have also finished my new Sentence Centers {Autumn Edition}

I love, love, love using these with my kids!
This week my students are unscrambling 3 sentences!

Included in this one is:

3 sets of fixing sentences centers and recording forms (progressively getting harder or perfect for differentiation)

2 sets of sentence scrambler cards and recording forms.

A fluency Center for students to practice reading fluently
... short vowel sentences
... long vowel sentences
... easy reader sentences
... beginning blends sentences
... recording form for students to write 1 sentence and illustrate to show understanding

Asking and Telling sentence sort and record

Silly Sentences 3 part flip and record

Using pictures and context clues in a sentence center

Welp, I'm off to bed! Sorry for the short post but I am TiReD!

See you later this week!

RTI Obsession!! = My Night!

Since the time I got home from school today it has been all about getting my guided reading groups together, Sight word and short vowel RTI -- Searching for Fluency RTI items! Well.. I got it! I created something simple for parents to help me out in the classroom when it comes to sight words & I found an awesome RTI Fluency packet on nothing other than ---TPT with Jen Jones! Hollerrrr (yah.. that doesn't come natural)!! ::)

Anyway I am going to share my RTI sight word stuff with you tonight and show you the stuff I got to get myself started with some Progress Monitoring! It's a short one tonight!

I began my night with dragging out all of my assessment data to group my students for GUIDED READING!! Yayy!!

Then, I went through each group and tried to write down target goals I have for the groups.
We use STAR Early Literacy so it was pretty easy to do but I just needed to find a starting point.

My lower groups will be working on segmenting CVC words and then blends with short vowels.
My two medial groups with be working on reviewing CVC words/Blends and then introducing the MAGIC E. We will also be working on developing a purpose for reading and expanding vocabulary.
My upper group will be working on developing a purpose for reading as well as answering questions about a text they are reading. I am going to meet with this 2x a week for the first 2-3 months then we will go down to one day a week because they can already read chapter books and I will just be checking in with them on a weekly basis after we get going.

More posts about guided reading to come... (NOT a geru here... I am just reading A LOT on this stuff and trying to get it down & of course wanting to share with you)

Now, progress monitoring.

I bought this...

If you teach 1st or 2nd grade and you have no resources for a consistent RTI process then this IS the way to go! I am in love with this product. If you want to check it out then click below.
Jen Jones is MMMMazing!

Then this is what I made for our sight words this year! I will be having my parent volunteers do this with students. I will be checking student sight words on my own on a regular basis. This is a practice activity for parents to complete with my students and to have more... you know that magical word... DATA!

Click on the picture to head to google docs to grab it up!
It's nothing to fancy but it'll get the job done!

I hope you can use it!

Stay tuned for more!

Have I got the freebie for you...APPLE WEEK!!

Hey friends! I have been slaving away today researching and brainstorming some fun stuff for apple week next week!! I found a ton of ideas out in blog land and wanted to compile all of the ideas in a file that was easy for me to use... & I wanted to add some extras to it!

This is a BIG freebie because about 50% of it is other peoples ideas and I didn't want to take credit for that nor did I feel right about putting a price tag on this one!

So, here you go! :) Take a peek and tell me what you think!

Enjoy it!

The Johnny Appleseed part of it is very minimal... I'm waiting to find some stuff to put in here...?!

Any ideas?!!

8 Stations in 1 week?!! & Visuals!

I got a great question on my last post and I too had the same question for the longest time. How do you get 8+ stations in during one week?!! Well, I hope to try to answer that for you to the best of my ability.

First I am going to show you my visual plans since that is probably the main reason why you came here! :)
... but, I promise if you stay you're not going to be disappointed!! :)
(wink, wink--free stuff)*

I hope these plans help you out this week!! :)

Now, onto 'How I get 8+ stations in each week with out craziness going on all around me!?"

Let me start off my saying that stations are by far my students and my favorite part of the day. It's a time they get to do, "fun stuff" as they call it... without even realizing that they are learning SO much! I get to work with kids during this time as well.

My Literacy Station block is 80 minutes long. On Monday and Tuesday students are pulled for math intervention for 20 minutes at the beginning of this time. Monday-Friday students are pulled for 30 minutes also at the beginning of station time. So, this time is my 'intervention' time and that is why the block is so long.

Below is my stations board. You will see 5 large blank white boxes on the board. This is where I place student pictures. Each box is a group of students. Those students work on three stations next to their card. Students are responsible for completing all three stations that day. ...Don't freak out yet!!

The three stations that they complete are ordered by 'urgency'-- if that's the right word to use for it?! (They're all 'urgent/important')... Their first station that the group must complete is the station that has a recording form. That means, it is one of the meatier stations that requires them to turn in a paper to show me they understand the concept. Students are not aloud to move onto the 2nd station until they have finished and turned in their work for the first station.

These are the kind of activities I use for first station rotations.

One of my first rotations is called a "Sentence Center." Here students work with sentences in different ways. This week students are fixing stations. Next week they might be unscrambling sentences or writing a describing sentence... With this station students complete it then fill out a recording form that they turn in to me.

This is another one of my stations that students complete for their first station rotation. I call this one "Word Work B." Here, students sort the short e words according to the short e word family. Students will record their answers on a recording form and then turn that into me.

You can grab this one for free now!
Click on the kids!

I also have a 'Write the Room' station. Each week students will work on a particular skill in write the room. This week students are unscrambling a short e sentence that contains some of their sight words.

I am currently in the process of making a write the room packet for first grade.
Stay tuned for that one!

Click & Grab this below!

When students move to their second station the same rules apply. Finish that station before you move onto your third.  The second station rotations are ones that do not always require students to turn in a recording form but more "word worky" activities. Take a look at the pictures below.

These are the type of activities I use for second station activities.
In the first picture with the large piece of cloud paper students pull a card and slap a short e word then write the word on an I-pad app. The second station is my 'Spelling Station.' Students will be writing these words in shaving cream on a cookie sheet.

For the second station you have to make guidelines or else the students will stay at these for the entire time! I always say the most you can do the station is 2 full times then you need to move onto your 3rd rotation. They are honest little things so they do a good job with this.

Students third station rotation is simply read to self or read to a partner. This is the time where the movement in the room begins to calm down and stations come to an end. If I notice that most of the students in the room finished they stations early and have the class has been reading to self/partner for a while then I will stop stations early... because they can get antsy... we all know that. Just use your best teacher judgment here.

So, basically you don't tell students when they are finished with a station. They work at their own pace and progress to the next station when they are ready. Having stations like this allow me to provide students with more 'content based' station activities rather then the same 'word worky' activities week after week. I like to have some meat built into these things but still keep some of the simple stuff for 2nd rotations.

Every time a student completes a station they also have to cross off their name so I know they have completed that station. If their name is not crossed off then I know what they need to make up. (This was taken Wednesday... whew!!)

* A little tip for you*

I hope this post helped some of you! It is very possible to get 8+ stations in a week but you just have to make sure they are all not 'meaty' stations. Make sure the first rotations take some thought and time... move onto the easier/word worky manipulatives activities for the second and wind the kids down with the third. It works like a charm in my room and I love it!

(Oh.. if you read my last post on how I did stations... Yah... I changed it--- wanted to try something new... didn't work so I went back to what works best for me)

If you have any additional questions then please do not hesitate to ask.
That's why I have this little blog! :)

Finally Five for Friday!!

O-ME-OH-MY!... Tonight after school I was zonked! Let's just say the phrase, "There's no kind of exhausted like teacher exhausted," is a true statement!

This girl got home at 5:30 tonight and drank a coffee to try to wake up & well it just didn't work! I went straight to bed and now it's 10:30 and this girl just woke up!

So, now that I have a little spurt of energy I thought... FINALLY, I have time and energy for a 5 for Friday!!! If you have the energy then click below to link up!

This week as supposed to be all about "Pete the Cat." I had my plans all done on Saturday and then Sunday we get a dreaded e-mail from our principal.. you know the ones that throw a wrench into your fun plans for the week? Let's just say Pete the cat only blessed us with his presence two times this week. :(

We had to do STAR assessments... and I know that doesn't sound bad but the kids (1st graders) had to do these on the I-pads--- they had to type in a username and password.

This doesn't sound so bad right?... well................ here is an example of a password that the kids had to type in on their I-pad.!

Can you imagine how long it took us to type this stuff into an I-pad? It was a great teaching experience though! Now my kids know how to switch keyboard on their I-pads, capitalize letters and find the punctuation. That part made me happy. Anyway, we did spend an hour on Tuesday learning to log in and then taking practice questions. Then Wednesday we did the math and reading portion of the star test. After the kids took these the poor little babies were so tired so I took it a little easy on them.

This week we went full fledge into Math Workshop and our Literacy Stations!
The kids are doing awesome with this!

Last year I was way too lenient with students during stations as in, they did talk, they weren't always on task and all that stuff. So, this year I am making sure my kids know what I expect and know how to do stations correctly.

Each time they break one of our 'classroom/literacy station rules' I call them back to the carpet. On the first day we were back at the carpet a total of 10 times to discuss what went wrong, then today we only came back 5 times! Improvement!

Here are the rules we came up with together! I like to keep it simple and to the point!

As soon as the students start to veer off track I ask them to stop where they are, leave everything where it is and come to the rug for a quick check-in. I am not moving clips on my behavior chart at this time since this is totally new to the students. I want them to learn the expectations first and not be reprimanded for breaking a rule on here yet... we are still learning. :)

Here are some snapshots of the stations in action!

I will have a post up on Sunday on how I do my literacy stations so stay tuned. If you read my last post on that you can ignore it... I tried that way, strongly disliked it and I changed it ASAP! :)

This week in Cheerleading... we had our first home game and we WON! 38-8! My girls did such a great job! Here is the run-through sign they had to whip up real quick!

Then, to leave you with a little something that put a big file on my face this morning. I told the little girl that gave this to me that I loved it so much I sent a picture of it to my mom and she started to squeal and jump up and down! :)
Can I just say that I love my job?!! I think it says, "Ms. Williams you are the best first grade teacher. Are you the best first grade teacher?" I think we got out sentences combined a bit. :) Adorable!

Have a happy weekend and I will see you Sunday for my Visual Plans!

How I Manage My Stations & Visual Plans!!

Last year I thought I had this station management thing all figured out BUT come to find out... not so much so I changed it again! Here is how I am going to manage my stations this year (unless it is a complete disaster--which I hope not--In teacher dream land it seems like it's goes to work!!).

I will start off with my station rotation board. I have 10 stations that students need to complete each week. I only make a few of them intense and the other ones are more simplistic/review stations where they are not having to sort cards and complete a recording form. I will always have about five stations that are considered my 'main, heavy duty' stations!

Each day students will clip on the white card and choose the station that they are going to complete. Once students finish their chosen station then they will choose another station.  Students are not able to join a station though that already has three people present at the station. I will always encourage students to choose one of the top 5 stations in the first row first for the day-those are the 'main' ones that have cards to sort.

Here is a close up of the station and then the white card that students will place their clip on.

Students will be responsible for checking off their name when they complete a station so they don't accidentally return to it that week. (Yes, this idea is from Cara Carroll) ;)
I laminated the class list and taped it to the top of the station tub.

I have a small room so I can't have the pretty bins on a whole bunch of shelves soo.. I bought this beaut' at Joanne's last year! I love it and it worked so well last year!

This is the inside of one of the tubs. So, students that are at 'write the room' will just have to grab a recording form and a clipboard to write on.
(This is part of a write the room packet for first grade that I am working on--stay tuned)
So, this one is perfect to keep in the bin.
The student's names are on the lid of this one as well so when they finish they will check off their name.

Same idea here for my ABC station. Cards are in a bag. I am currently working on an ABC station packet as well!

I do have room to have 3 of my stations set up for the kids throughout the week. They are my 'meatier' stations so it works nicely. The stations that are set up have the student list right beside it. There is a dry erase marker right next to the station and when students complete it they will put a line through their name.

The same idea here: this is my writing station and right beside it is the class list.

For my smarty pants students who will finish these stations quickly I copies Mrs. Cara's idea and I am having 'desert bins.' When students finish they have a choice of 3 additional activities that they can complete.
They will need to use a checklist for these too so they don't keep doing the same one over and over and over and OVER again! :)

They are very, very simple. I have their spelling words for the week on flash cards in the bags. Bin 1 is a short a game we learned already. Bin 2 has word tiles and spelling flash cards. Bin 3 has white board strips and their spelling words. I will switch these out with other fun things throughout the year.

Now... here are my visual plans. My stations are included this week so you can see the kinds of activities we are doing to kick-off our literacy stations! Wish me luck... I hope it's not an epic fail! ahh!!... I'm nervous/excited!
