My Teaching Strategies*

This post is going to purely talking about teaching strategies I use and find to be successful in my classroom. How did I come up with the idea for this post? (Interviews)!! When it is job search time a teacher tends to reflect on 'how' they teach. I don't normally think about the 'how' and 'why.' I guess you could call that the 'good thing about interviews.' They really make you think about how you teach and why--it really is hard to expand on WHY you do what you do in the classroom! I am going to talk it out here. :)

The most common teaching strategies I use are:
1. The Hands on Approach
2. Modeling
3. Collaboration in the classroom
4. Movement
5. FACILITATE

When I talk about these they all kind of go together so I am not going to number them one at a time. Also, this is not from any book but just from my 'noggin.' :) (Had to throw some silly me in here somewhere)!!

I truly believe students learn best by DOING. Students at this age need to be exploring and they need to be the leaders of their own learning. I try to foster this as much as possible. By doing this it strongly encourages students to communicate with one another. When I plan lessons I think of the 'how' can I show them what to do and then how can I let them explore?

Sometimes we teachers can get so caught up in how much we need to teach our students that we feel we don't have time to let our students take ownership of their own learning--especially in the early grades. We can think of a concept... we know how to model it and we know how to give them a worksheet to end the lesson quickly. Really?! Do you think they're going to remember that worksheet ... like tomorrow even? No, students need concrete experiences-- I like to make my students learning experiences come to life! I like to create a sense of excitement--that emotion makes them remember!!

It's really not hard to do and it doesn't take big expensive shiny stuff! It can be as easy as putting a motion to the word -sequence-! Make the students do a motion to show beginning to end. Guess what?! Each time you bring up that word--they're going to remember it! Another toughie is 'schema!' This is such an important concept in all grades and being able to use it is very important. How do students use it though if they can't even remember the meaning of the word when you mention it? Motion--do a lesson on ONLY schema --it'll save you time later in the year when you bring it up because all you have to do is mention WHAT you did during that lesson and you get the infamous, 'OH YAH!'

I love to give my students ownership of their own learning because it teaches them to gain a sense of responsibility. Just be sure to teach them how to do this by involving them.

A big way I 'involve' students in their own learning is by getting them out of their seats. I remember being in first grade and I did not enjoy sitting all day! My favorite was getting to sit in someone elses' seat, sitting on the floor, standing and jumping!! WHAT?!

We do this during reading by coming to the rug-- I model a comprehension strategy by reading a book to my students. It's so important for them to listen to us read so they know what expression and fluent reading sounds like. Anyway, we model--then, students *do* This means we break off into our 'reading workshop' approach and the students read a book of their choice or a shared reading book that we are focusing on during the week. Students collaborate with one another and complete some sort of activity--whether it be a project, writing or something to do with the concept taught. Then, we like to come together as a class and share. Students really learn best from each other. Communication allows for students to share how they solved a problem or how they found a certain way to do something (like figure out a comprehension concept).

Our lessons don't stop there because we always follow up our whole group instruction with our reading stations. This is where I pull my small groups and my students are responsible for completing their assigned activities for the week. I have noticed that during stations many teachers do not allow their students to talk. For some reason it bothers me when my kids are not talking (quietly) during this time. Yes, there are times where students need total silence but I don't think station time should be that. This is the time when students really are the LEADERS because the teacher is busy teaching. I don't get mad when my students are talking and sometimes I listen to them... like last week I was listening to one of my little guys explaining their writing assignment. He wasn't only explaining it but he was re-teaching the entire lesson that I taught to him! CAN YOU SAY AMAZING?!! I love it because if I were to say--NO TALKING--then, that little guy would have never gotten the chance to take ownership and feel the freedom to teach one of his peers.

All in all... this is how I teach. My classroom is not one where you can hear a pin drop--we talk and move--- a lot!! :) We have fun, we remember what we learn and we have a classroom community that is as close as ever. There are times when we don't talk--I don't want you to think it's a crazy talking classroom but, most of the time (75%) we are collaborating with each other! :)

Alright... I'm glad I got all of this out--reflection is key to interviews! :)

Learning the /AR/ Sound!

This week in phonics we have been learning all about our first r-controlled blend!! -AR-
In my classroom I feel like we are always on a time crunch and fitting in phonics along with everything else just seems near impossible. So, I have been trying to combine a bit to hit it a lot of content at once! In have been creating phonics packets to do just that! They focus on phonics, comprehension and all sorts of other language CCSS.

We have a basal at my school and honestly... I use it- but, not on a weekly basis! Sometimes the stories are just blah and my team and I just decide to do our own thing in a sense! (Like these phonics packets)!

Alright, so enough jibber jabber! Here is what I'm talking about!

-This week we began our phonics unit with a poster full of AR words that can be found here.
I display the poster on my interactive whiteboard and students help me break apart the words and identify the different AR word families.

After we learn our words we write the room! I love write the room because it gets the kids up and moving and reading their new words--Oh, and they talk about them too!! That's just amazing!

That is normally our mini-lesson as a whole class on Mondays! Then, I provide extra instruction to my struggling students during our reading station time!
*****************************************************************
On Tuesdays we break into our phonics story of the week!
The phonics story also has a focus on a comprehension concept. This week it was how a characters feelings can change throughout the story with a mix of how to answer questions using complete sentences! ;)

We do read this book together and as we read each page we go on a 'search' for the /AR/ words. (Remember--it's still a phonics lesson too) Students underline the words with yellow and I have a lead student at the interactive board who highlights them as well!

Below (if you can see it--oh, how I need a camera and not an iPhone camera) - this little guy did an awesome job answering the questions in complete sentences! This week we read the questions together and then students would share complete sentences with one another - we share a few together and then students write their own sentence! Love it!! (Can you say we hit that speaking standard?) :) :)

1. Shark Dark felt happy when he got his art homework
2. When shark saw everyone else's card he felt sad because the other cards were different.
3. Shark felt happy because his art teacher said his card and jar and candy was the best.

On the back of the page above I copied the other comprehension practice page. This part just reviews some previously learned comprehension concepts. This week we reviewed main character, setting, sequencing and identifying a detail in the story! This was the students morning work this morning!! ;)
This is how I save time so we can get other things in!! :)

On Thursdays we practice spelling our words together in the morning and that takes about 5-10 minutes. I provide extra phonics support in small group throughout the week AND there are three HAVE TO activities that students must complete during their literacy station.
They are below! :)

Students magnify the tiny words. They write the words correctly and illustrate. Having the students illustrate tells me if they can actually read the word or not. It's a very easy way to assess! :)

I always love a sorting station to help students differentiate phonetic sounds. Students this week are sorting words with AR sounds and other A sounds. Then, they color code them (with a few extra words added in) ;)

This week I put in an ABC order center and I know, I know this little one got one wrong but... guess what I do with that! I take her back and review with her how to alphabetize words that begin with the same letter!! (Plus she has a cute picture--so blog post worthy)!!

Students also have a simple assignment that they complete at read to a partner each day and it is all about fluency!!
Students read all six sentences to their partner while their partner times how long it takes them! I swear this works and OMG they have a blast!!! It is so cool to see their times decrease from Monday to Friday!

All of these goodies can be found in my packet below called, "Working with /AR/"

Also, stay tuned for my next upcoming phonics packet!! Oh, this one is going to be just as great!!
This one will focus on the R-Controlled vowel /OR/!

I have a few other phonics packs as well! I hope to get all sorts of phonics packs like these completed for you guys to enjoy with your kids!!

Some*bunny* Is Ready For Rabbits!

This week we are learning all about those cute little Easter critters!! I purchased a huge spring writing packet from Hope King. Her packet inspired this cute little rabbit below.

This is our little rabbit that's going to get our brains going on our schema of rabbits!
I will be writing down student schema on sticky notes and placing them to the left of the rabbit. Then, we will be organizing information into subtopics. I have headers that I will be placing on our anchor chart (belly, cloud and right side of rabbit).

We are reading this booklet I created to find out information about rabbits and review some text features.
This will help us organize our thoughts because we will really be focusing on our headers!

This week we are also digging into UE and EW Stations and making something I call BLUE GEW!
I can't wait to make this stuff with my kids!! Hopefully it helps them remember their new phonics skill!!

I haven't done a giveaway in forever and so I thought, "Hey, let's give this packet away!"

April Currently & a peek at my schedule!

Raise your hand if you are so happy that April has arrived! I hope April is good to us here in Ohio! --- By that I mean... No More Snow!! Today was nice and warm but very windy-- but, guess what?! I'm  not complaining!! It was gorgeous today! Anyway, here is my April currently!

Listening: American's Funniest Home Videos -- Nuff said! :)

I don't always watch America's Funniest Home Videos... but when I do the winners are never the videos I laughed at.
This is how I felt at the end of the show!! -HA

Loving: I get a three day spring break! We had to make up two days this week for our bazillion snow days we had in January! We got station in and then we watched a movie with pop-corn that a parent brought in for us this afternoon! :) - These are always the best days! One little guy was so upset though. He said, "This means first grade is almost over--NO!!!!" -- Oh, I love how first graders LOVE school! :)

Thinking: I need to go shopping! I need a new dress-up outfit and a dress for my bridal shower!
I want something like this for my bridal shower... I may be making a trip to the mall tomorrow!

Tiffany Blue Lace Dress

Wanting: To feel better! I came down with a cold yesterday! It will just not do because I have something very important coming up & a cold just isn't something that needs to be happening right now!!

Needing: To do my lesson plans for next week --- It's all about DINOSAURS!! EEEEEK! I also need to finish a money unit that I've been working on for a while & I need to finish spring literacy stations so I have stations for Monday!--This girl will have one busy spring break!

Hours & Last Day: My school hours are 8:50-3:35 and we get out on May 30th!! I figured--since we're on the topic---let's go through my whole day! :) Here's a peek in my room on any given day!

Please excuse my picture. I don't have any of morning work. :)

Here we learned about symmetry together and we drew the other half of the flower. Afterwords students worked on showing their knowledge with a symmetry activity.

Last week we worked on telling stories.

This is from my Dino-Basketball Unit. We were focusing on how to describe everything included in a setting.

Students work with me on phonics or comprehension skills. Other students work on literacy stations. The one above is from my Basketball Literacy Packet.

Here we were focusing on living and non-living! A unit that we will be finishing after spring break!

I hope you enjoyed looking at my day and reading my currently! I hope to see you back!
